Review : Neat little model of my favorite Star Wars ship
The Nebulon B is one of those great background elements from Star Wars that you barely notice but which had as much care and attention lavished on it as any of the iconic designs that took center stage.
Star Wars was one of the first science fiction series that really took note that in space there's no need for aerodynamics, so the Nebulon B breaks all the rules for a 'cool' space ship. It's not sleek, it's not streamlined, it has no wings or fins, it has exposed cables and superstructure and random compartments sticking out. And it's great.
The designers were inspired by the shape of an outboard motor of all things, and then tried to give it a more curved and organic shape to contrast with the Imperial ships with their sharp edges.
This toy captures the Nebulon B well, it's tough metal and plastic and well painted. It's about 3" long and, though not in scale, looks great on the shelf next to my other Star Wars and Star Trek ships.
